The pasta carbonara was amazing, seriously life-changing. But they had this weird, almost invisible, side dish, like a tiny spoonful of something green and oily. The waiter wouldn't tell me what it was, just smiled mysteriously. Anyone know what that mystery side dish is? I'm dying to know! It tasted...interesting...

oh that's def their salsa verde variation. fiore di zucca does this weirdly good anchovy and wild herb thing, super concentrated. the waiter prob thought it was a test, they do that sometimes with regulars. if u go back ask for the "crema di zucca" off menu, it's not the same but close enough.

honestly that sounds like their colatura di alici emulsion. it's this super ancient roman fish sauce they do tiny doses of. fiore di zucca is known for that old school stuff, not the touristy carbonara. next time just ask for "la salsa segreta" and they'll prob smirk and bring it out.

Sounds like a classic case of cucina segreta! Italian restaurants, especially the family-run ones, often have little surprises. It could be anything from a simple parsley oil to something more unusual, a family recipe passed down for generations. Your best bet might be to try contacting the restaurant directly, maybe they'll spill the beans (pun intended!). Failing that, I'd suggest scouring some Italian food blogs or forums, someone's probably encountered this mysterious green condiment before. Good luck on your quest!

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
