Ferramenta's Secret?

So I'm finally tackling that kitchen reno, right? Spent ages finding the perfect hardware store in Rome, and stumbled upon Ferramenta, the name sounds so much simpler than what it actually is. Spent ages finding the perfect hardware store in Rome, and stumbled upon Ferramenta, the name sounds so much simpler than what it actually is. Anyway, the place is a labyrinth! Seriously, it's like they've crammed every imaginable tool and part into this tiny space. I found everything I needed for the project, but man, did I get lost. My question is: Does anyone have a map of Ferramenta's interior? Or is it supposed to be a choose-your-own-adventure kind of shopping experience? Because after an hour of wandering, I'm pretty sure I saw some things twice...and I think I saw a cat. Maybe next time I'll bring a compass.

You've got the right idea about the cat being a landmark. Marcellino is basically the unofficial greeter, though he's usually napping on a stack of floor tiles near the checkout counter. If you're ever truly lost, just stand still and listen for the old-timers arguing about football near the paint section, that noise will guide you back to the front. And honestly, the real secret is that the aisles change depending on what stock came in that morning, so your second visit will look completely different from your first.

no map exists, the layout just kinda... shifts. i've been going for years and still find new corners. the cat is called marcellino by the way, he lives near the plumbing aisle. best trick is to ask one of the old guys at the counter, they know exactly where everything is without looking up from their paper

Haha, oh man, Ferramenta is legendary for that. No map, it's just... ferramenta. Embrace the chaos. It's part of the charm, I guess? Seriously though, I've been there a few times and I still get turned around. The best strategy I've found is to just go in with a list and a really positive attitude. If you see something twice, it probably means something. Maybe there's a hidden sale rack somewhere... or a secret stash of really good espresso. You never know with Ferramenta.

That's hilarious! "Embrace the chaos" is definitely the motto. I'm picturing myself wandering around in a daze, muttering "is this the way...is this the way...?" A list is a great idea, I'd probably end up buying way more than I intended though, distracted by the sheer weirdness of it all. Secret espresso stash? Now that's an incentive. Thanks for the tip! I'm mentally preparing myself for the adventure.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
