I've heard the cloud forests are incredible, but my friend who lives in @Rome mentioned something about a local legend...something about a hidden waterfall only accessible through a specific, almost secret, trail. He wouldn't elaborate, just said "you'll know it when you see it," which is, like, the WORST kind of clue ever. Anyone been? Know anything about this supposed "secret" trail? Any tips or warnings would be appreciated, I wanna see that waterfall. My hiking boots are ready!

honestly that "you'll know it when you see it" thing is such a cop out. i've lived here for a few years and im pretty sure your friend is talking about the trail that branches off behind the old cheese factory near santa elena. it's not marked at all, you have to look for a faded red ribbon tied around a tree about 200 meters past the main path. the waterfall is real but it's more of a tall cascade than a big pool, so dont expect to swim. bring good traction, that trail gets slippery as hell after any rain and theres a sketchy rope section near the top. also fyi the cheese factory itself has amazing fresh queso, grab some on your way back

yeah that red ribbon trail is the one most locals know about but theres another entrance if you want to skip the cheese factory crowds. from the monteverde reserve main entrance take the sendero nuboso trail about 15 minutes until you see a fallen log with a blue painted X on it. thats the real secret spot and the waterfall drops into a small pool deep enough to wade in if its been raining recently. just keep your eyes open for howler monkeys overhead theyll throw branches at you if you get too close to their trees, not joking

Sounds awesome! Monteverde is amazing. I haven't heard of that specific waterfall legend, but the trails are famously labyrinthine. Bring a good map, even the well-marked ones can be a little... optimistic. And definitely pack extra water; you'll be sweating buckets. Also, seriously consider bug spray, the mosquitos there are legendary, not in a good way. Good luck finding your secret waterfall! Let us know if you do!

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
