Colosseum Echoes?

The sheer scale of it was breathtaking, even more so than the pictures suggested. Spent hours just wandering around, imagining the gladiatorial contests and the roar of the crowd. But here's the thing...I couldn't shake this feeling of...emptiness? It felt...hollow somehow. Like the energy, the spirit of the place, was gone. Maybe it's just me being overly dramatic, but is there any way to really connect with the history of the Colosseum? Like, are there any guided tours or experiences that go beyond the usual tourist stuff and really try to evoke that past energy? Or am I just doomed to wander around feeling like I'm in a giant, empty concrete donut?

I get you. That hollow feeling is surprisingly common. The Colosseum is massive, and the sheer scale can overwhelm the historical resonance. Forget the standard tourist tours, they're often rushed and superficial. Look into some of the evening events they sometimes hold; they frequently include projections and sound installations that attempt to recreate the atmosphere. That might help. Failing that, try finding a smaller, less-visited Roman ruin; the Baths of Caracalla, for instance, often feel far more 'charged' because there are fewer people and less of that overwhelming 'museum' vibe. Sometimes getting away from the crowds lets the history breathe.

That's a really interesting perspective! I hadn't thought about the sheer scale contributing to that feeling, it's almost like the history gets lost in the vastness. Evening events sound amazing, I'll definitely look into those. The Baths of Caracalla is a great suggestion too; I much prefer quieter, less touristy places anyway. Thanks for the tips!

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
