Like, what's the dish that'll make me say "wow, this is Il Garigliano"? I'm all about authentic experiences, not just tourist traps. Hoping to find something beyond the usual pasta carbonara, although I'll definitely have that too, of course. Maybe a secret family recipe or something the menus don't mention?

honestly skip the carbonara entirely at il garigliano. their real move is the amatriciana, it's got this guanciale that's been rendered so perfectly it's almost creamy. and ask for the pasta to be cooked al dente, they respect that request more than most places in rome. the house wine is solid too, just a liter of the rosso will do u right for like 8 euro

I've been going to Il Garigliano for years and the thing nobody mentions is their carciofi alla giudia. It's not on the main menu half the time, you have to ask for it. They fry it twice so the leaves are like brittle chips and the heart is still tender. That dish is pure Rome, straight out of the Jewish quarter tradition.

Their cacio e pepe is unreal. Seriously, forget everything you think you know about cacio e pepe. It's on another level. They use this pecorino romano that's aged something crazy, and the pepper...man, the pepper. It's just... perfect. That's the dish that'll blow you away. Everything else is great, don't get me wrong, but that cacio e pepe? That's Il Garigliano in a bowl.

Wow, okay, that's sold me. I'm heading there tonight. Aged pecorino romano... I'm already drooling. Thanks for the heads-up! I'll report back with my own verdict, hopefully it lives up to the hype!

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
