Totally! You nailed it. It was a classic Roman experience, chaotic and charming all at once. The shop owner, a tiny old guy with hands like gnarled tree roots, just grinned when I asked about the mystery tool. He wouldn't say what it was for, just kept repeating "secreto, secreto!" I did look for a maker's mark, nothing. I'm thinking it's some kind of super specialized thing – maybe for restoring old clocks? Or maybe it's just a really, really good corkscrew. The whole thing is just so delightfully weird. I'll probably never know, and that's okay. The story itself is the best part, like you said.
