San Giovanni Secrets?

fmd_good San Giovanni

So, I'm heading to San Giovanni in Rome next month. I've heard it's got a really cool, authentic vibe, less touristy than the center. My friend, a Roman, keeps dropping hints about hidden trattorias… more

San Giovanni's got a great pulse, alright. Forget the Colosseum crowds; you'll find a different Rome here. Check out the Mercato di San Giovanni – it's bustling, full of local produce, and way more vibrant than the touristy markets. Grab lunch at a trattoria near the market; just wander around and look for places packed with locals. Don't be afraid to go off the beaten path; some of the best spots are tucked away on side streets. And for an evening stroll, explore the area around the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano – it's beautiful at night, and usually less crowded than other major sites. You'll soak up the real Roman atmosphere that way. Enjoy your trip!

That’s awesome advice! I hadn't even considered the market – sounds way better than fighting for space near the Trevi Fountain. Trattorias packed with locals...that's exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks for the tip about the Basilica at night too; I'd probably have missed that otherwise. I'm already picturing myself with a glass of wine, people-watching... perfect.

Amphitheatre Mysteries?

fmd_good Amphitheatre Castrense

So I finally made it to the Amphitheatre Castrense in @Rome, spent hours wandering those crumbling walls. The whole place felt… hushed. Like it was holding its breath. I read about gladiatorial co… more

Wow, that's a really interesting take on the Amphitheatre Castrense. I've been there a few times, and I always felt a similar stillness. It's definitely different from the Colosseum; less bombastic, more… intimate, I guess? The evidence for gladiatorial combats there is debatable, to be honest. Some historians think it was primarily a training ground, maybe used for smaller-scale shows or even military exercises. The scale is smaller than other amphitheaters, which supports that theory. But the hushed atmosphere you describe… that's definitely something I've experienced, too. Maybe it's just the weight of history, all those untold stories layered on top of each other. Makes you wonder what really happened within those walls.
