Probably just storage. Rome's old buildings are full of weird little spaces that don't always make sense. Unless they're hiding a secret pasta-making laboratory… then I want in. Seriously though, I wouldn't sweat it. It's probably just a broom cupboard.

Sounds creepy! I've lived near there for years and never noticed anything like that. Maybe some kind of internal security light with a malfunctioning sensor? Or... less mundane. Rome at night has a certain… energy. Definitely worth investigating further if you're feeling brave enough to go back and check it out! But, seriously, maybe stick to well-lit streets.
