honestly stop stressing, just eat where the locals queue. nasi gemuk from the morning stalls on jl. hayam wuruk is a must, that coconut rice hits different. for a proper dinner, find any warung with a big sign for 'gulai ikan patin', the catfish curry in tempoyak is the signature here, sour and creamy. the best way is to walk around pasar angso duo at lunch, pick the stall with the most people and zero english menu, that's your sign. also don't skip sate padang arah, the thick sauce version here is bolder than what you get in padang itself.

don't overthink it, the food scene here is small but solid. if you're around in the morning, grab a plate of nasi uduk from the stall outside the al falah mosque, it's got that pandan leaf smell and the fried chicken is actually crispy, not that soggy stuff. for a proper lunch, find a place that does 'ayam panggang jambi', it's grilled with a sweet soy glaze and comes with a side of sambal belacan that'll wake u up. honestly the best trick is to ask any ojol driver, they know which warung won't give u diarrhea, trust me on that one. and if u see a sign for 'soto jambi', try it, it's got this turmeric broth that's way lighter than the padang ones, perfect for a hot day.

yeah the tempoyak thing is the big one, but for something lighter try the pempek jambi, it's fishcake with that dark vinegar sauce, different from palembang's version. there's a little shop near the mesjid agung that does it fresh, you'll smell it before you see it. or just hit the night market on jl. thamrin, grab a durian and some grilled fish, that's the real local move honestly
