🍜 Must-Try Local Dishes
Balikpapan's food scene is anchored by fresh seafood and Indonesian classics. Start with amplang, a crispy fish cracker snack, and move on to nasi kuning, fragrant yellow rice served with fried chicken and sambal. Another favorite is soto banjar, a aromatic soup with beef and rice cakes, often sold at warung like Soto Banjar Hj. Anang on Jl. MT Haryono. For a full meal, try ikan bakar, grilled fish marinated in sweet soy sauce, at waterfront restaurants in Kampung Baru.

🍢 Street Food Hotspots
The best street food clusters around Pasar Klandasan and along Jl. Jenderal Sudirman in the evenings. Look for satay stalls selling sate ayam and sate kambing for around IDR 20,000 to 35,000 per portion. Another night market is at Balikpapan Superblock, where vendors offer pisang goreng, martabak, and es cendol from 5 PM to 11 PM. Prices are low, so bring small bills and be ready to eat standing or at plastic stools.

🐟 Seafood by the Sea
Balikpapan is a coastal city, so seafood is a highlight. Head to Restoran Kepiting Kenari on Jl. Marsma R. Iswahyudi for crab and shrimp dishes, with prices around IDR 100,000 to 250,000 per person. Another reliable spot is Dandito Restaurant on Jl. MT Haryono, known for its butter prawns and fish head soup. For a more casual setting, try the grilled fish stalls at Pantai Manggar, open daily from 10 AM to 9 PM.

☕ Cafes and Coffee Culture
Balikpapan has a growing cafe scene, especially in the Sepinggan and Damai neighborhoods. Kopi Janji Jiwa on Jl. Jenderal Sudirman serves local coffee blends for around IDR 18,000 to 30,000 per cup. For a cozy atmosphere, visit Kedai Kopi Kita on Jl. Pangeran Antasari, open from 8 AM to 10 PM. Many cafes also offer free Wi-Fi and power outlets, making them popular with remote workers.

🍛 Traditional Warungs
Warungs are small family-run eateries that serve affordable and authentic meals. Warung Nasi Padang Sederhana on Jl. Ahmad Yani offers rendang, gulai, and cassava leaves for IDR 25,000 to 45,000 per plate. Another favorite is Warung Soto Banjar Hj. Anang on Jl. MT Haryono, where a bowl of soto costs about IDR 20,000. These places often open early for breakfast and close by late afternoon.

🍽️ Fine Dining Options
For a more upscale experience, try The Grand Restaurant at Hotel Grand Tjokro on Jl. Jenderal Sudirman, which serves Indonesian and Western dishes from IDR 80,000 to 200,000 per main course. Another option is Ocean's Resto on Jl. Yos Sudarso, known for its seafood platters and harbor views, with dinner for two costing around IDR 400,000. Reservations are recommended on weekends.

🌙 Late-Night Eats
After 10 PM, the food scene shifts to night stalls and 24-hour spots. Along Jl. Soekarno-Hatta, you'll find nasi goreng and mie goreng vendors open until 2 AM, with prices around IDR 15,000 to 25,000. For a sit-down option, Warung Steak 21 on Jl. MT Haryono stays open until midnight and serves chicken and beef steaks for IDR 35,000 to 60,000. Always check the stall's cleanliness and popularity before ordering.

💡 Practical Food Tips
Most warungs and street stalls are cash-only, so carry small bills in IDR. Tipping is not mandatory, but rounding up the bill is appreciated. If you have a sensitive stomach, stick to freshly cooked hot foods and avoid raw vegetables. Finally, lunch hours from 12 PM to 1 PM can be crowded, so arrive early or after 1:30 PM for a more relaxed meal.

Nice work pulling all this together, the warung section is the part most guides get wrong and you nailed it.

One angle worth adding is the Chinese-Indonesian side of Balikpapan's food, which rarely makes these lists. The old shops around Pasar Baru and Jl. Pangeran Antasari do a proper bakmi kering with char siu, and the kwetiau siram at the stalls near Kelenteng is better than anything downtown for under 40k. If you're there on a Sunday morning, the bubur and cakwe vendors set up early and clear out by 10.

Also for the late-night section, the nasi goreng kambing carts near Simpang Rapak hold their own against the Sudirman ones and the crowd is more local than tourist. Worth a mention in the next revision.

solid list, Soto Banjar Hj. Anang is spot on. one thing the guide missed tho, if u go there before 9am you'll beat the queue, after that it gets hectic with office crowds.

also for amplang, skip the supermarket stuff and grab it fresh from the shops near Pasar Klandasan, the difference in crunch is real. and fwiw the sate kambing stalls on Sudirman are better after 8pm when the coals are properly hot.

appreciate the writeup, the seafood section is on point. one thing tho, Kepiting Kenari is great but the wait on weekends can hit 45 mins, so I usually call ahead or go weekday lunch. also for ikan bakar, the warung row at Kampung Baru Atas (not the waterfront ones) does a mean ikan pari bakar with dabu-dabu, cheaper too, like 60-80k for a whole fish. dunno why the guide skipped it.

if u want amplang to bring home as oleh-oleh, the vacuum-sealed packs at Bandara SAMS Sepinggan are actually fine and survive the flight better than loose ones from the market.

🗓️ Day 1 Morning: City Center
Start your day at Taman Bekapai, a central park with a fountain and food stalls, open from 6 AM to 10 PM. Then walk 5 minutes to Balikpapan Plaza on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman for a quick breakfast at one of the local cafes. From there, take a 15-minute taxi ride (about Rp 30,000) to Kemala Beach to enjoy the morning sea breeze.

🍽️ Day 1 Afternoon: Culinary Tour
Head to Jalan Marsma R. Iswahyudi in Sepinggan for a lunch of Balikpapan's famous seafood, such as grilled fish with sambal dabu-dabu at Warung Seafood 99. After lunch, visit the nearby Balikpapan Super Block (BSB) mall for shopping and air-conditioned comfort. In the late afternoon, try local snacks like pisang goreng at the street stalls along Jalan MT Haryono.

🌅 Day 1 Evening: Sunset & Relax
Catch the sunset at Pantai Manggar Segarasari, about 30 minutes by car from the city center. The beach has a small entrance fee of Rp 10,000 and offers fresh coconut drinks. For dinner, return to the city and dine at Kepiting Kenari on Jalan A. Yani, known for its crab dishes, open until 10 PM.

🏞️ Day 2 Morning: Nature Escape
Take a 45-minute drive to Bukit Bangkirai in Samboja for a canopy walk among towering trees. The entrance fee is around Rp 20,000, and it opens at 8 AM. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as the trails can be steep.

🐒 Day 2 Afternoon: Wildlife & Lunch
After Bukit Bangkirai, head to the nearby Orangutan Conservation Center in Samboja Lestari, about 20 minutes away. A guided tour costs Rp 150,000 and lasts about an hour. Have lunch at the on-site cafe, which serves simple Indonesian meals like nasi goreng.

🌃 Day 2 Evening: City Lights
Return to Balikpapan and visit the iconic Balikpapan Islamic Center on Jalan MT Haryono, beautifully lit at night. Then explore the vibrant night market at Pasar Baru in Klandasan, open from 5 PM to 11 PM, for street food like sate and martabak. End the day with a drink at a rooftop bar such as Sky Lounge at Hotel Novotel.

🏖️ Day 3 Morning: Beach Hopping
Spend your last morning at Pantai Lamaru, a quieter beach about 20 minutes from the city center. The entrance fee is Rp 5,000, and you can rent a mat for Rp 10,000. Relax, swim, or try banana boat rides for Rp 50,000 per person.

🛍️ Day 3 Afternoon: Shopping & Departure
After the beach, head to Balikpapan Icon Mall on Jalan MT Haryono for last-minute souvenirs like kain tenun or local coffee. The mall is a 30-minute drive from Lamaru and has a food court for a quick lunch. If you have time, visit the nearby Bekapai Park for a final stroll before heading to the airport, which is 20 minutes away.

Good rundown, I've lived here a few years and most of this checks out. One correction on Day 1: Warung Seafood 99 is fine but the locals mostly go to the row of seafood places along Jalan Marsma closer to Sepinggan, the grilled kepiting at the smaller warungs there is cheaper and just as fresh. Also Pantai Manggar charges more than Rp 10,000 now, I think it was Rp 15,000 last time I went, and parking is separate.

For Day 2, skip the on-site cafe at Samboja Lestari if you can, the food is pretty forgettable. There's a warung about 10 minutes back toward the main road that does a solid pangsit goreng, better value for the drive back.

The rooftop bar tip is good but Sky Lounge gets windy after 9, bring a light jacket if you're staying a while.

the day 3 beach morning is the right call but lamaru gets packed after 9am on sundays, go at 7 if u can. also the banana boat guys there quote 50k but it's usually per boat not per person so clarify before u hop on, saved us some arguing last time

one thing missing from day 1: if u like coffee, stop by kedai kopi near jalan jenderal sudirman before kemala beach, the kopi susu there is better than anything at the mall and opens early around 6.30. cheap too, like 15k

for the islamic center at night, the lights come on around 6.30 and the best view is actually from the parking lot side not the main entrance, less crowded for photos

Solid write-up, covers the main spots well. One thing I'd flag though: Day 2 is packed tighter than it looks. Bukit Bangkirai to Samboja Lestari is not really 20 minutes, the road in is rough and I've had it take closer to 40, so budget extra time or you'll be rushing the canopy walk. Also the Orangutan Center tour is worth it but book ahead, walk-ins sometimes get turned away when a group is already scheduled.

For Day 1, Kepiting Kenari is a good pick, but if you want the crab without the wait, go before 6 PM. By 7 there's usually a queue on weekends. And the pisang goreng stalls on MT Haryono are best around 4 to 5 PM when they're fresh out of the oil, later than that they sit under the lamp and go soft.

One the guide missed for Day 3: if you're flying out in the evening, the airport area in Sepinggan has decent seafood too, so you don't have to backtrack to the city center for a last meal. Saves you the traffic on Jalan Marsma.
