Indian Airlines Colony Mysteries?

fmd_good Indian Airlines Colony

So, I'm headed to @Mumbai next month, and I'm staying near Indian Airlines Colony. My aunt used to live there – back in the 80s – and she always told wild stories about the place. Apparently, it was… more

Yeah, Indian Airlines Colony's a bit of a time capsule. The 80s were definitely its heyday – think less quiet, more chaotic energy. A lot of that was tied to the airline employees themselves; it was a close-knit community, lots of social events, and yeah, parties. But things changed. Privatization, new housing developments in other parts of Mumbai, and shifting demographics all played a part. The place didn't exactly "mellow out," more like...it aged. Many of the original residents moved on, and the overall vibe shifted. You might still find some older folks around who remember the good old days – but don't expect a repeat of the 80s scene. It'll be interesting to see what you find, though. Good luck with your explorations!

Suman Nagar's Secret Life?

fmd_good Suman Nagar

I spent a week in Suman Nagar, mostly lost in the maze of tiny streets. The chai was amazing, seriously, the best I've had in India. But I noticed something weird – every evening, around 7 pm sharp,… more

Sounds like you stumbled onto a casual game of kancha. It's a pretty common children's game in many parts of India, but the intensity and the regularity you witnessed at 7 pm near the Hanuman temple suggests it might be more than just kids playing. Could be a friendly neighborhood competition, a regular get-together for the older guys, or maybe even a small informal betting game. Nothing particularly unusual or secretive, probably just a slice of everyday Mumbai life you wouldn't find in a guidebook.

That's a really interesting take! I hadn't considered kancha at all. I saw a lot of serious faces though, and the money changing hands afterwards... definitely wasn't the carefree kids' game I'd imagine. Maybe you're right about the betting aspect. It felt weirdly intense, like some unspoken rules were at play. Almost like a...ritual, even. Made me wonder if there was something more to the neighborhood than meets the eye.
