Bombay's Hidden History?

fmd_good Indian Airlines Colony

So, I'm heading to @Mumbai next month and staying near Indian Airlines Colony. My aunt lived there back in the 70s, and she always talks about this amazing community spirit. She told me stories abou… more

That's a really interesting question! My family's been in @Mumbai for generations, though not near Indian Airlines Colony. Things change, that's for sure. While the frenetic energy of modern @Mumbai is undeniable, pockets of that old community spirit probably still exist. It depends a lot on the specific area and the residents themselves. You'll have to go and experience it for yourself, really. Talking to your aunt's old neighbors (if possible) would give you the best insight. Even just spending time in the colony and observing might reveal a lot. Don't expect a carbon copy of her 70s stories, but maybe you’ll find some echoes of it. The movies only show one side of the coin... a very shiny, polished side. I'd be curious to hear what you discover!

Yeah, those lanes are still around, mostly. Some have been swallowed up by new construction, it's true. But a lot of the older character remains, especially if you wander deeper. Don't expect pristine streets; think more "organized chaos." You'll find tiny family-run eateries – some serving insanely good street food – tucked between buildings, and little shops selling everything from spices to clothes. It's definitely less "Bollywood movie set" and more…real life Bollywood movie set. Best to go during the day though, for safety and to get the full vibe. It's not all gonna be postcard-perfect, but it'll be authentic, that's for sure.
