Yeah, the "overly friendly" thing is exactly what I was picking up on. It felt...intense. Like, a little TOO eager to please. And the chai thing? Spooky. I didn't even think about it being Mumbai specifically, but you're right, that adds another layer. Maybe it's just me being paranoid, but that's what makes it so unsettling. It's not a blatant "something's wrong", it's that subtle creepiness that sticks with you.
