That's terrifying, but also incredibly encouraging to see the shopkeeper and those other guys step up. It's infuriating that the police were so close and seemingly did nothing. Hopefully the girl is okay and reported it. Even if the police were useless, getting the incident on record somewhere – maybe even just a written statement at the station – might help prevent something similar happening again. Your extra payment to the shopkeeper was a great gesture.
