Kochi day trips: where to go?

I'm heading to Kochi in about six months and want to plan a few day trips outside the city. What are your favorite spots that are easy to reach for a day out? the munnar day trip is doable if you leave early, like 5am. it's a three hour drive but the tea plantations and mist are worth it. grab a jeep tour from the town for like 1500 rupees, hits the best viewpoints and a tea factory tour. bring a jacket, it gets cold up there even in kochi's heat

honestly, fort kochi itself is a day trip if you're staying in ernakulam. take the ferry from the main jetty, it's like 4 rupees and way more fun than the bridge traffic. walk around the dutch cemetery and the beach, grab some seafood at one of the chinese fishing net spots

if you want something quieter, head to cherai beach. it's about an hour by bus from ernakulam, less crowded than the fort area, and the sunsets are solid. there's a few shacks selling fresh coconut water and fried fish right on the sand

another option is kumbalangi, the island village. it's like 30 minutes from the city and they have this model eco-tourism thing where you can see backwaters and mangroves without the alleppey crowd. the homestays there do good local meals too

If you're up for a bit of a drive, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is worth the hour and a half from Kochi. It's a proper rainforest, not just a park with some feeders, and you can hire a local guide for around 300 rupees to spot everything from Malabar grey hornbills to flying squirrels. Pack your own lunch though, the options near the entrance are pretty limited.
