Is the original Ambur-style mutton biryani still worth the hype in 2026, and do I need to go to a specific branch or is any outlet fine? Also curious what the seeraga samba rice situation is like there.

Ambur original branch, not Chennai outlets.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Yeah the seeraga samba is the whole point there.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

honestly the samba there soaks up way more ghee than basmati so expect a softer grain, not separate

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Ask for less oil on the side

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

good shout on the oil, they do tend to go heavy. i'd add asking for the brinjal gravy separately so it doesnt drown the rice. last time at the kodambakkam one the mutton was falling off the bone but the rice got a bit greasy toward the bottom

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

chunkier than the hyderabad style for sure

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

kodambakkam outlet runs greasier than the mount road one in my experience, so branch does matter a bit

visit chennai outlets before noon, less crowd

The bill came to noticeably more than what the guys at the next table seemed to pay, so I'm trying to work out the actual menu rate for a beer and a peg there in 2026. What do locals typically hand over at a place like this?
arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Settle the bill at the counter, not the table.

arrow_drop_up 17 arrow_drop_down

fair point but check the rate card first so u know what ur actually paying at the counter

arrow_drop_up 0 arrow_drop_down

Counter receipt, itemised, every time.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Agreed, but make sure the itemised receipt shows the peg measure, since 60ml versus 30ml is where the markup usually hides.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Ask for the peg rate card, don't order off-menu.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

And check the peg measure in front of you

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Right, though the card only lists the standard 60ml peg. Thouseef quietly serves 30ml unless you specify, and the difference at 2026 rates is around 200 rupees a peg. Confirm the measure when you order.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

the tourist markup is real, ask for the peg rate card

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

yep, and check the rate card before u sit down

arrow_drop_up 17 arrow_drop_down

Worth doing that before you order, since the 30ml versus 60ml peg thing catches most visitors out.
