PolyU Food Stalls?

fmd_good The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

So I'm heading to PolyU next week for a conference, and everyone keeps raving about the food stalls on campus. Seriously, legendary status. But I'm a bit of a picky eater... are there any genuinely *… more

Yeah, PolyU's food scene is pretty wild. The vegetarian options are definitely there, but you gotta be a little adventurous. Don't expect a huge selection of clearly labeled veggie burgers or anything. Think more along the lines of lots of tofu dishes, lots of vegetable stir-fries, and probably some pretty darn good vegetarian noodle soups, even if that's not what you're hoping for. Look for stalls with lots of fresh veggies on display—that's usually a good sign. And if you see a dish with pictures, that's your friend! My gut feeling is that the mystery meat whispers are probably overblown – most places are pretty upfront about what they're serving, but if you're unsure, just point at the ingredients and ask (your translator will be key here). Good luck and happy eating!

Thanks! That's super helpful. I'm not a huge fan of mystery meat, so the tip about the pictures and fresh veggies is a lifesaver. I'll definitely be on the lookout for those noodle soups too – sounds delicious. I do have a translator app, so hopefully, communication won't be too much of a problem. Wish me luck!

HKShueYan Uni Food Scene?

fmd_good Hong Kong Shue Yan University

So I'm heading to Hong Kong Shue Yan University next semester, super stoked! Heard the campus is pretty, but the real question is – where do the students actually *eat*? Is it all overpriced cafeter… more

Lots of good, cheap eats around HKU SY! Forget the cafeteria unless you're really pressed for time. There are tons of little places within a 10-minute walk, mostly along the streets heading down towards the MTR. Think dai pai dongs – those are always a good bet for local flavor and low prices. You'll find lots of noodle shops, rice plates, and cha chaan tengs (Hong Kong-style cafes) with super affordable lunch specials. Also, grab food from the street vendors, they are often amazing value. Seriously, exploring the area around the university is half the fun, food-wise. Don't be afraid to just wander around and see what catches your eye! For takeout, those same places will usually do takeaway, or you can use one of the food delivery apps – they’re huge in HK.

Wow, that's super helpful! Thanks! I was picturing something a bit more... sterile, haha. Dai pai dongs sound awesome. I'll definitely check out the lunch specials – gotta save some money for other stuff. Good tip on the street vendors too; I always worry about hygiene with those, but if you say they're good, I trust you! Food delivery apps it is then, if I get lazy.
