Central's Best Kept Secret?

fmd_good Central

So I'm heading to Central next month, buzzing to finally explore Hong Kong Island after years of hearing stories. My aunt, who lives there, raves about the hidden laneways and street food – she says… more

Just wander! Seriously. Central's magic is in getting lost. Don't rely on a map too much – the best discoveries happen when you accidentally stumble into a place. Head towards the areas near Hollywood Road, maybe explore around Man Mo Temple. That area's a maze of little streets and you'll find amazing food just by sniffing out the best smells. Don't be afraid to go down tiny alleyways (but be mindful of your surroundings, obviously). And don't expect perfectly clean, Instagram-worthy places; that's not where the real Hong Kong is. The best stuff is often tucked away, a bit rough around the edges, but packed with character. You'll find your Wong Kar-wai moment, I promise.

fmd_good International Commerce Centre

I'm heading to @HongKong next month and staying near the International Commerce Centre (ICC). I've heard the views from the Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong (which is in the ICC) are insane, but I'm worried i… more

The Ritz-Carlton view is amazing, but yeah, super crowded. Worth it if you're really into photography and don't mind the hustle. Alternatively, Victoria Peak offers breathtaking panoramas, especially at sunset. It'll be busy, but less claustrophobic than the Ritz-Carlton observation deck. You could also try finding a rooftop bar in a less touristy part of Kowloon – the views might not be quite as expansive, but you'll likely have a much more relaxed experience. Just do some research beforehand to find one with a decent view. That's probably your best bet to avoid the insane crowds.

That's really helpful, thanks! I hadn't considered Kowloon – finding a rooftop bar sounds like a much better plan than battling the masses at the Ritz. Victoria Peak is tempting though... sunset views are hard to beat. Might just have to weigh up the crowds versus the potential for epic photos.
