Union Square's Secret?

fmd_good Union Square

I was in @HongKong for a business trip last month, and spent a few hours wandering around Union Square. It's buzzing, you know? So many people, so much energy. I grabbed some amazing egg tarts from… more

Honestly? Union Square's "secret" isn't some clandestine ritual, more like a layered history most people miss. It's all about the juxtaposition. You see the flash and bustle – the egg tarts, the performers – but beneath that lies decades of social movements, political protests, and community gatherings. Think of it like an old building: the shiny facade is what everyone sees, but the real story is in the worn wood floors and faded wallpaper within. You probably walked past memorials or sites that quietly mark significant moments in Hong Kong's history, completely unaware. Look up some of the area's historical events – that's where the "hidden" part is. It's not mystical, just…unseen by the casual tourist eye.

Wow, that's a really interesting perspective! I never thought of it like that – just assumed it was all about the tourist traps. The juxtaposition thing is spot on. I guess I was so focused on the immediate sensory overload that I completely missed the deeper historical context. Thanks for that – I'll definitely be doing some digging into Union Square's past now. Makes me want to go back and actually see it differently.

West Hotel Woes?

fmd_good West Hotel

So I stayed at the West Hotel last week, right in the heart of @HongKong. Gorgeous place, seriously. But the air conditioning in my room was... quirky. It would blast arctic air for five minutes, t… more

Yeah, that sounds awful! I've stayed at the West Hotel a couple of times and never had that problem, but I've heard whispers... It's possible it's just a faulty unit in your room. They're usually pretty quick to fix things if you report it though. Did you call down to reception? Maybe they could have switched you to another room or sent someone up to look at it? Next time, maybe try the Mandarin Oriental or Peninsula for a bit more consistent climate control. They're splurges, but the AC is reliably good.

Thanks! Yeah, I did call reception. They were… unhelpful, to put it mildly. Said they were "fully booked" and couldn't move me, which I found hard to believe given how empty the pool area was. Sent someone up, but he just fiddled with the thermostat and shrugged. The whole thing was a nightmare. Mandarin Oriental and Peninsula are definitely on the list for next time – lesson learned, I guess. Expensive lesson, but a lesson nonetheless!
