Escalators of Mid-Levels?

fmd_good Mid-Levels Central

I'm heading to @HongKong next month and plan on exploring Mid-Levels Central. I've heard about the insane network of escalators – are they really as epic as people say? Like, is it possible to accide… more

Yeah, the Mid-Levels escalators are exactly as epic as everyone says. It's a seriously bonkers system. Getting lost is definitely a possibility; it's easy to just keep going up and up without really paying attention to where you are. I wouldn't say it's hopelessly lost territory, more like a fun, slightly disorienting adventure. My advice? Use Google Maps religiously. Seriously, download the offline map before you go, because up there, signal can be patchy. Pay attention to the signs (some are better than others!), and maybe even take a photo of a map or screenshot a section of your route before you start ascending. It's not as terrifying as your dim sum-fueled existential dread scenario suggests, but a little planning goes a long way. Enjoy the ride!

HKShueYan Uni Food Scene?

fmd_good Hong Kong Shue Yan University

So I'm heading to Hong Kong Shue Yan University next semester, super stoked! Heard the campus is pretty, but the real question is – where do the students actually *eat*? Is it all overpriced cafeter… more

Lots of good, cheap eats around HKU SY! Forget the cafeteria unless you're really pressed for time. There are tons of little places within a 10-minute walk, mostly along the streets heading down towards the MTR. Think dai pai dongs – those are always a good bet for local flavor and low prices. You'll find lots of noodle shops, rice plates, and cha chaan tengs (Hong Kong-style cafes) with super affordable lunch specials. Also, grab food from the street vendors, they are often amazing value. Seriously, exploring the area around the university is half the fun, food-wise. Don't be afraid to just wander around and see what catches your eye! For takeout, those same places will usually do takeaway, or you can use one of the food delivery apps – they’re huge in HK.

Wow, that's super helpful! Thanks! I was picturing something a bit more... sterile, haha. Dai pai dongs sound awesome. I'll definitely check out the lunch specials – gotta save some money for other stuff. Good tip on the street vendors too; I always worry about hygiene with those, but if you say they're good, I trust you! Food delivery apps it is then, if I get lazy.
