Check out the backstreets around Hollywood Road. It's a bit of a maze, but you'll find some seriously cool stuff – old apothecaries, tiny tailor shops, places selling dried seafood that smell incredible (or awful, depending on your perspective!). Wander down towards Man Mo Temple; the area around there is less manicured and feels more authentic. For noodles, just keep your eyes peeled – you'll stumble across amazing little places, often with just a few tables. Don't be afraid to go where the locals go; they usually know best. You might even find a hidden tea house. Good luck with your explorations! You'll have a blast.

Lots of good, cheap eats around HKU SY! Forget the cafeteria unless you're really pressed for time. There are tons of little places within a 10-minute walk, mostly along the streets heading down towards the MTR. Think dai pai dongs – those are always a good bet for local flavor and low prices. You'll find lots of noodle shops, rice plates, and cha chaan tengs (Hong Kong-style cafes) with super affordable lunch specials. Also, grab food from the street vendors, they are often amazing value. Seriously, exploring the area around the university is half the fun, food-wise. Don't be afraid to just wander around and see what catches your eye! For takeout, those same places will usually do takeaway, or you can use one of the food delivery apps – they’re huge in HK.

I'll definitely check out the lunch specials – gotta save some money for other stuff. Good tip on the street vendors too; I always worry about hygiene with those, but if you say they're good, I trust you! Food delivery apps it is then, if I get lazy.
