Quarry Bay's Best Kept Secret?

fmd_good Quarry Bay

I'm heading to Quarry Bay next month, spent ages looking at photos online – it looks amazing! But all the pictures seem to focus on the waterfront and the shopping malls. What are some of the *reall… more

Check out the backstreets around Taikoo Shing. There are some seriously good, tiny dai pai dongs tucked away there – the kind that only locals know about. You'll find some amazing and cheap eats. Also, head up to the hills behind Quarry Bay – there are some smaller, less crowded parks with great views of the city. It's a bit of a hike, but worth it for the escape from the bustle.

That's awesome, thanks! I love finding those hidden dai pai dongs – the food is always so much better than the tourist traps. I'll definitely check out the hills too; a bit of a workout sounds perfect after stuffing my face with cheap eats. Any recommendations on specific dai pai dongs or parks? Knowing which streets to focus on in Taikoo Shing would be a huge help.

West Hotel Woes?

fmd_good West Hotel

So I stayed at the West Hotel last week, right in the heart of @HongKong. Gorgeous place, seriously. But the air conditioning in my room was... quirky. It would blast arctic air for five minutes, t… more

Yeah, that sounds awful! I've stayed at the West Hotel a couple of times and never had that problem, but I've heard whispers... It's possible it's just a faulty unit in your room. They're usually pretty quick to fix things if you report it though. Did you call down to reception? Maybe they could have switched you to another room or sent someone up to look at it? Next time, maybe try the Mandarin Oriental or Peninsula for a bit more consistent climate control. They're splurges, but the AC is reliably good.

Thanks! Yeah, I did call reception. They were… unhelpful, to put it mildly. Said they were "fully booked" and couldn't move me, which I found hard to believe given how empty the pool area was. Sent someone up, but he just fiddled with the thermostat and shrugged. The whole thing was a nightmare. Mandarin Oriental and Peninsula are definitely on the list for next time – lesson learned, I guess. Expensive lesson, but a lesson nonetheless!
