Haha, the Tim Ho Wan queue is a rite of passage! Seriously though, a lot of it is timing. Weekdays, early mornings, or late afternoons usually have shorter waits. Also, some locals might be regulars who know the staff or have made reservations (though I’ve heard getting reservations there is hard). And some people are just lucky, plain and simple. Don't feel bad about the wait; you conquered the queue, and those buns sound amazing! Next time, maybe try another dim sum place – there are tons of fantastic spots in @HongKong that are less…intense.

Probably just a storage area or maintenance access. Nothing too exciting, I'd guess. Lots of those hidden doors around sports grounds. Unless... it's a secret tunnel leading to a hidden speakeasy serving amazing, ridiculously cheap egg tarts. Now that would be a story. Worth checking out some local forums or even asking around at a nearby cha chaan teng – they're usually in the know about the weird and wonderful stuff in their neighborhoods.
