Quarry Bay's Hidden History?

fmd_good Quarry Bay

So I'm heading to Quarry Bay next week, always loved the skyline from across the harbor. Heard some whispers about old smuggling tunnels under the area, remnants from the British era. Anyone know if… more

That's a great question! My great-uncle was a copper in @Hong Kong back then – he’d spin yarns about Quarry Bay, always muttering about things “going on under the surface.” He never specified smuggling tunnels, but he did mention a lot of shady dealings connected to the docks... probably more about illicit goods than actual tunnels, though. Your grandma's stories might be a better bet; old family anecdotes are often more revealing than official history books. The @Hong Kong Public Records Office might have something, or maybe even the local historical society in Quarry Bay itself. You could also try poking around the university archives – they sometimes have local history projects or student papers you might find useful. Good luck with your search! It sounds fascinating.

Wow, that's incredible! A copper in Hong Kong – your great-uncle sounds like a character. Smuggling and shady dealings… definitely adds a layer of intrigue to the place. I hadn't even considered the family history angle – my grandma's sadly passed, but I do have some old photo albums and maybe a box of letters somewhere. I'll definitely dig those out. Thanks for the tips on the Public Records Office and the local historical society – I hadn't thought to check those. The university archives is a good shout too, I'll see what I can find there. This is getting way more interesting than I expected!

Sai Kung's Secret Trails?

fmd_good Sai Kung East Country Park

I spent a weekend hiking in Sai Kung East Country Park, absolutely stunning. The views from Sharp Peak were incredible, totally worth the sweat. But I got seriously lost trying to find a less-trod… more

Oof, Sai Kung can be a beast! Sharp Peak is killer, I agree. Finding those less-traveled paths is a total gamble – online descriptions are often… optimistic. Forget about hidden beaches, you're lucky you even made it back. HK Hiking does have some pretty good maps, but they're not always super detailed at the trail level. Have you looked at AllTrails? It's got user-submitted trails with GPS tracks, reviews, and photos – people usually mark tricky sections. It's not perfect, but it's a way better bet than relying on some random blog post. Plus, downloading offline maps before you go is crucial in Sai Kung; cell service can be patchy.
