That's a good point about the pipe leak or fungus – hadn't thought of that! It's not a massive dead patch, more like... oddly shaped, and definitely not consistent with something like a leak. Plus, it's been there for months. A stray cat hiding spot is also a possibility, though the shape is… peculiar. I will definitely take some photos next time I'm there. Thanks for the suggestions!
