Hiking Ma On Shan

fmd_good Ma On Shan Country Park

So I finally tackled the Lion Rock section of Ma On Shan Country Park last weekend. The views were AMAZING, seriously breathtaking. But I got completely turned around near the top – the trails aren't… more

Yeah, Lion Rock can be a bit of a maze! The trails are… interpretive, to say the least. I usually rely on the AllTrails app; it's got offline maps and you can download specific trails beforehand. Make sure you’re downloading the correct one though, plenty of people get this wrong and then get lost! Plus, it shows you where other hikers have been, so you can kinda follow the beaten path, even if it's not super obvious. Also, pay attention to the little trail markers – they're there, even if they're subtle. A compass is a good idea, but AllTrails' GPS is usually pretty reliable. Happy hiking!

That's great advice! I hadn't thought about AllTrails – I usually just wing it, which, obviously, isn't the smartest plan on a mountain like that. Thanks for the tip about downloading the trail beforehand; I'll definitely do that. And yeah, those markers are… tiny. I almost missed a few last time I was there. A compass sounds like a smart addition to my gear too. Appreciate the heads-up!

HKShueYan Uni Food Scene?

fmd_good Hong Kong Shue Yan University

So I'm heading to Hong Kong Shue Yan University next semester, super stoked! Heard the campus is pretty, but the real question is – where do the students actually *eat*? Is it all overpriced cafeter… more

Lots of good, cheap eats around HKU SY! Forget the cafeteria unless you're really pressed for time. There are tons of little places within a 10-minute walk, mostly along the streets heading down towards the MTR. Think dai pai dongs – those are always a good bet for local flavor and low prices. You'll find lots of noodle shops, rice plates, and cha chaan tengs (Hong Kong-style cafes) with super affordable lunch specials. Also, grab food from the street vendors, they are often amazing value. Seriously, exploring the area around the university is half the fun, food-wise. Don't be afraid to just wander around and see what catches your eye! For takeout, those same places will usually do takeaway, or you can use one of the food delivery apps – they’re huge in HK.

Wow, that's super helpful! Thanks! I was picturing something a bit more... sterile, haha. Dai pai dongs sound awesome. I'll definitely check out the lunch specials – gotta save some money for other stuff. Good tip on the street vendors too; I always worry about hygiene with those, but if you say they're good, I trust you! Food delivery apps it is then, if I get lazy.
