Quarry Bay's Best Kept Secret?

fmd_good Quarry Bay

I'm heading to Quarry Bay next week for a conference. Everyone keeps raving about the amazing street food scene, but the brochures are all glossy pictures of fancy restaurants. I'm more interested i… more

Honestly, Quarry Bay's not exactly overflowing with dai pai dongs like Mong Kok or Causeway Bay. Most of the "street food" there is going to be more upmarket hawker stalls than the truly hole-in-the-wall type. Your best bet is to wander around the residential areas a bit – away from the main commercial streets. Look for places with lots of locals eating, not fancy menus or English signs. It's more about stumbling upon things than having a specific address, sadly. Good luck with the conference, though! You'll probably find some decent stuff if you explore a bit beyond the immediate conference center area. Maybe ask some locals – taxi drivers are often surprisingly good sources of info on the best cheap eats.

Yeah, that makes sense. I figured it wouldn't be as crazy as Mong Kok. I'll definitely try venturing away from the main drag then. Thanks for the tip about the taxi drivers – hadn't thought of that! It'll be a good excuse to get out of the conference a bit anyway. Appreciate the advice!

Escalators to Heaven?

fmd_good Mid-Levels Central

So I finally hiked up the Central-Mid-Levels escalator system in @HongKong. It's insane! Took me ages, and I kept getting lost amongst all the little shops and cafes tucked away. Seriously, it felt… more

Haha, yeah, it's a total rabbit hole! I lived near it for years and honestly, you just kinda... learn. It's like learning the layout of a really weird, hilly building. There's no secret map, just muscle memory and a healthy dose of getting wonderfully, hopelessly lost occasionally. You start to recognize landmarks – that little bakery with the amazing egg tarts, that weird statue, that particularly steep bit where you swear you’re going to fall… and then eventually, your brain just maps it all out. It's less a maze and more a really, really long, uphill street with lots of side alleys. You'll get it eventually.
