Finding MingGarden's Secret?

fmd_good MingGarden Restaurant

I'm heading to @HongKong next month and stumbled upon this place, Ming Garden Restaurant, online. The reviews are all over the place – some rave about the Peking duck, others say it's wildly overpric… more

Honestly, the Peking duck hype is mostly true. It is good, but yeah, pricey. Forget the "hidden menu" stuff – that's usually marketing fluff. What you should do is go during off-peak hours. The service is way better then, and you'll actually get a chance to chat with the staff. They might suggest some specials not on the main menu, or even better, tell you what ingredients are freshest that day. That's where the real "secret" lies. Skip the fancy stuff and let them guide you. You might be surprised.

That's actually really good advice! I hadn't thought about the off-peak hours thing. I always figured the best stuff would be packed, you know? Makes total sense to go when it's less busy. Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely try that. Maybe I'll even get some recommendations beyond the duck... I'm always up for trying something new.

HKShueYan Uni Food Scene?

fmd_good Hong Kong Shue Yan University

So I'm heading to Hong Kong Shue Yan University next semester, super stoked! Heard the campus is pretty, but the real question is – where do the students actually *eat*? Is it all overpriced cafeter… more

Lots of good, cheap eats around HKU SY! Forget the cafeteria unless you're really pressed for time. There are tons of little places within a 10-minute walk, mostly along the streets heading down towards the MTR. Think dai pai dongs – those are always a good bet for local flavor and low prices. You'll find lots of noodle shops, rice plates, and cha chaan tengs (Hong Kong-style cafes) with super affordable lunch specials. Also, grab food from the street vendors, they are often amazing value. Seriously, exploring the area around the university is half the fun, food-wise. Don't be afraid to just wander around and see what catches your eye! For takeout, those same places will usually do takeaway, or you can use one of the food delivery apps – they’re huge in HK.

Wow, that's super helpful! Thanks! I was picturing something a bit more... sterile, haha. Dai pai dongs sound awesome. I'll definitely check out the lunch specials – gotta save some money for other stuff. Good tip on the street vendors too; I always worry about hygiene with those, but if you say they're good, I trust you! Food delivery apps it is then, if I get lazy.
