Sai Kung's Secret Trails?

fmd_good Sai Kung East Country Park

I hiked the MacLehose Trail in Sai Kung East Country Park last month, absolutely stunning views! But I got seriously lost near the High Island Reservoir. The trail markers were...sparse, to say the… more

Yeah, the MacLehose Trail can be a bit... challenging in parts. Especially around High Island Reservoir. The signage is, generously, described as "minimalist". I've had good luck with the Gaia GPS app – it uses offline maps and you can download specific trail sections. It’s a paid app, but worth it if you plan on doing more serious hiking in Hong Kong. Another option is to check out the official Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) website; they sometimes have more detailed maps than what you find readily available online. And a compass is definitely your friend out there! Seriously.

Wow, thanks for the detailed info! Gaia GPS sounds like a lifesaver – I'm definitely looking into that. High Island Reservoir sounds intimidating, haha. Minimalist signage is an understatement I think. I appreciate the AFCD website tip too; hadn't thought of checking there. A compass...noted! Guess I should probably brush up on my map-reading skills before I attempt anything too ambitious.

Quarry Bay's Hidden Trails?

fmd_good Quarry Bay

I spent a week in Quarry Bay, Hong Kong, mostly working, but I managed to sneak in some exploring. The skyscrapers are amazing, but I stumbled upon some seriously overgrown, almost forgotten paths we… more

Those overgrown paths are likely unofficial – Hong Kong's urban sprawl is a bit chaotic, so these little pockets of wilderness just...happen. They're not on any official walking map I've ever seen, that's for sure. Locals probably know about them, but it's not like there's a well-trodden tourist trail. You were lucky to stumble on them! Your best bet for finding more is just wandering around Quarry Bay's less-developed areas – maybe near the waterfront or tucked away behind some older buildings. Keep an eye out for little gaps in the walls, or unexpected turns in alleyways. Think less "trail" and more "urban exploration." Good luck on your next trip!
