PolyU's Hidden History?

fmd_good The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

I'm heading to The Hong Kong Polytechnic University next month for a conference. I've read about its role in the 2019 protests, but all the news reports feel...distant. Anyone know of any good, low-… more

Check out the little park tucked away behind the main library – it's usually pretty quiet, even during the busiest times. Students often hang out there during breaks, and it’s got a nice, unassuming feel. Also, there's a small, family-run cha chaan teng a few blocks east of campus near the old red-brick buildings; it's not flashy, but it's a genuine local spot, popular with students and staff. Avoid the places right on the main roads; they cater more to tourists. Go a block or two down any side street – that's where you'll find the authentic Hong Kong PolyU vibe.

Wow, thanks! That little park sounds perfect for a quiet study session. And a cha chaan teng? Definitely adding that to my list. I'm always hunting for places that aren't swarming with tourists. I appreciate the heads-up about the main roads – will definitely be exploring the side streets. Sounds like a good way to soak up the real PolyU atmosphere.

Forget ParknShop for the truly bizarre stuff. Head to a smaller, independent supermarket – the ones tucked away in residential areas. They're usually crammed with stuff you won't find anywhere else. Think dried seafood that looks like it's been there since the British left, mystery meat products with unidentifiable ingredients, and candy that'll glow in the dark...probably. Seriously, wander the aisles; you'll find things that'll make your grandma's dentures rattle. Don't be afraid to just point and buy, even if you have NO idea what it is. That's half the fun!
