Union Square's Hidden History?

fmd_good Union Square

I was in Union Square last week, dodging the usual tourist throngs. It's buzzing, of course, but I stumbled upon this tiny, almost hidden alleyway off Geary Street – it felt like stepping back in ti… more

That's awesome! Union Square's got layers, you know? Beneath all the modern stuff, there's a ton of history crammed into those little side streets. Geary Street especially – it used to be the place for everything from theaters to bordellos back in the day. You probably walked past a building that’s seen some serious action over the years. Finding old tailor shops tucked away isn't unusual; that area was a major garment district for a long time. Try looking into San Francisco's historical society archives – they might have photos or records of that specific alleyway or even the faded sign you saw. Lots of old city directories are online now, too. That could help you pinpoint what was there. Good luck with your sleuthing! You've definitely hit on something interesting.

Forget the guidebooks. Head towards the residential areas near the MTR station. Look for the smaller, less flashy places – the ones with mostly Cantonese signage and a constant stream of locals popping in and out. Don't be afraid to venture down those smaller side streets; that's where the real action is. Trust your gut; if it looks busy and smells amazing, it probably is. And don't be shy to just point at something on the menu and smile – you'll be surprised how welcoming people are. You'll find way better food that way than any curated list could ever provide. Happy eating!

That's awesome advice! I'm definitely going to try that approach. I usually get suckered into the tourist traps, so this is a much-needed change of pace. Thanks for the tips; I'll report back on my culinary adventure!
