Old fishermen sometimes talk about a "sea dragon" that lives in the deeper waters – nothing concrete, just a warning to stay away from certain coves at night. It's more about respecting the natural world than terrifying spirits, I think. Most of the local folklore revolves around the fishing villages themselves, and those stories usually involve hard work, bad luck at sea, and surprisingly strong women. You'll hear more of that if you spend time chatting with folks in the villages themselves, rather than in the hiking trails. Grab some dim sum and a Tsingtao – that'll get the stories flowing better than any ghost.

Look for places with long queues of locals – that's usually a good sign. And don't be afraid to try something you've never heard of! That's half the fun.
