Hong Kong Central's Hidden Lanes

fmd_good Central

So I'm heading to Central in @HongKong next month. I've seen all the glossy photos of the skyscrapers and the harbour, but I'm really interested in the smaller streets and alleys – the ones tourists… more

Definitely! Central has a ton of those hidden laneways. Wander around Hollywood Road – it's packed with antique shops and smaller side streets that lead off into quieter areas. Also, check out the area around Man Mo Temple; the streets nearby are super charming and less crowded. For food, just get lost! Seriously. That's half the fun. You'll stumble upon amazing little places you'd never find otherwise. Don't be afraid to go down any alley that looks interesting – you'll find some proper local eats that way. And bring cash, many of the smaller places are cash only.

That's awesome advice! I love the idea of just getting lost and stumbling upon hidden food gems. Hollywood Road sounds perfect, I've heard about the antique shops there. Man Mo Temple too – I'll definitely check out the surrounding area. Thanks for the cash tip, I would've been completely unprepared for that! So excited to explore now.

St. Joseph's Mystery

fmd_good St. Joseph Anglo-Chinese Primary School

I'm visiting @HongKong next month and plan to walk past St. Joseph's Anglo-Chinese Primary School. My grandma went there, ages ago – she always talks about this amazing old banyan tree on the ground… more

No idea about the banyan tree's current status, but St. Joseph's is pretty central. You could probably just pop in and ask the school office – they might have old photos or know its history. Worth a shot! Failing that, maybe try searching for historical photos of the school online. Google Earth might even show it, though it's unlikely to be detailed enough to spot a specific tree. Good luck connecting with your grandma's memories!

That's a great suggestion! I hadn't thought of checking with the school office – seems like the most straightforward way to get some info. I'll definitely try that. And yeah, trawling through old photos online...that could take ages, but worth a try I guess. Google Earth is a long shot, haha, you're right. Thanks for the tips!
