Quarry Bay's Hidden History?

fmd_good Quarry Bay

I'm heading to Quarry Bay next week, and I've been reading up on its history as a, well, quarry. But all the articles focus on the modern development. Does anyone know of any good, accessible places… more

Nah, finding actual, untouched remnants of the old quarry in Quarry Bay is probably a long shot. Most of it's been built over. Your "overgrown path" fantasy is…optimistic. Think more concrete jungle than jungle, you know? However, you might get some sense of it by checking out some of the older buildings around the waterfront – some might have architectural details that hint at the area's past. Look for anything that seems oddly out of place, maybe with different stonework or construction methods than the surrounding newer buildings. Also, hitting up the Hong Kong Heritage Museum might turn up some photos or records that give you a better picture. It's a long shot, but worth a try before you go!

Yeah, I figured it wouldn't be easy! Concrete jungle's a good way to put it. The waterfront building idea is actually pretty smart – hadn't thought of that. I'll definitely check out the Hong Kong Heritage Museum too; thanks for the tip! Maybe I'll find some old postcards or something. Worst case scenario, I get to explore some older architecture, which isn't a bad consolation prize.

Mid-Levels Mystery

fmd_good Mid-Levels Central

I'm heading to Mid-Levels Central in a few weeks, and I've heard SO many stories about the hidden staircases connecting different parts of the area. Seriously, it sounds like a maze! One local told… more

Hah, the Mid-Levels staircases are a trip! I once stumbled upon a guy practicing Tai Chi...at 3 AM. Completely unexpected, and kinda unnerving in the pre-dawn gloom. Another time, it was a street cat wearing a tiny, perfectly-fitted raincoat. Seriously. No joke. You'll find way more than just tea houses, trust me. Prepare for the unexpected. And maybe bring a flashlight.
