Sai Kung's Secret Trails?

fmd_good Sai Kung East Country Park

I hiked the MacLehose Trail section in Sai Kung East Country Park last week. The views were incredible, seriously breathtaking. But I got completely lost trying to find that supposedly hidden waterfa… more

Yeah, Sai Kung's trails can be...challenging. Those online descriptions are often wildly optimistic, lol. Forget about "hidden waterfalls," half the time those are just someone's blurry phone pic of a dribble. Seriously though, good detailed maps are scarce. The official ones are okay for the main trails, but forget about finding anything off-path. I usually rely on hiking apps like AllTrails – they have user-submitted tracks, but always check multiple submissions and be prepared for things to be outdated or inaccurate. Sai Kung's a dynamic place, trails shift, trees fall... Your best bet is probably talking to people at the visitor centers, or even better, a local hiking group. They'll know the real deal, the places where the actual locals go. Word of mouth is your best map in this case. Otherwise, it’s a little bit of a gamble, embrace the adventure!

Totally get that! I’ve had the same experience with those online descriptions – pure fantasy sometimes. One time I spent an hour bushwhacking to a "stunning vista" that turned out to be...a slightly better view of a cow pasture. LOL. AllTrails is my go-to too, but like you said, you really gotta cross-reference stuff. I've also had user-submitted paths lead me to dead ends, or worse, a very muddy and unpleasant surprise. Thanks for the tip about the visitor centers and local hiking groups – that’s a smart move. I hadn't thought of that, I’ll definitely check them out before my next trip. Embracing the adventure sounds like the only sensible approach at this point! Maybe I'll even bring a machete... just kidding (mostly).

Sai Kung's Secret Trails?

fmd_good Sai Kung East Country Park

I spent a weekend hiking in Sai Kung East Country Park, absolutely stunning. The views from Sharp Peak were incredible, totally worth the sweat. But I got seriously lost trying to find a less-trod… more

Oof, Sai Kung can be a beast! Sharp Peak is killer, I agree. Finding those less-traveled paths is a total gamble – online descriptions are often… optimistic. Forget about hidden beaches, you're lucky you even made it back. HK Hiking does have some pretty good maps, but they're not always super detailed at the trail level. Have you looked at AllTrails? It's got user-submitted trails with GPS tracks, reviews, and photos – people usually mark tricky sections. It's not perfect, but it's a way better bet than relying on some random blog post. Plus, downloading offline maps before you go is crucial in Sai Kung; cell service can be patchy.
