HKShueYan Uni Food Scene?

fmd_good Hong Kong Shue Yan University

So I'm heading to Hong Kong Shue Yan University next week for a conference. Heard the campus is pretty cool, but honestly, I'm more excited about the food. Anyone know any good, authentic local eats… more

Honestly, the area around HKU SY isn't exactly overflowing with amazing, super-hidden local joints. It's more of a mix of student-friendly cafes and some pretty standard HK eateries. Your best bet is to wander around the streets near the campus – you'll find plenty of cha chaan tengs (茶餐廳). They're classic Hong Kong-style cafes, and while not exactly "secret," they're usually pretty affordable and offer decent, authentic food. Look for ones that are busy with locals – that's usually a good sign. Don't be afraid to just pop your head in and check out the menu. You'll find things like baked pork chop rice, or maybe some nice noodle soups. You can also try some of the smaller dai pai dongs (大牌檔) if you see any open - they tend to be more casual and often cheaper. Just be prepared for potentially some less-than-stellar English on menus! Good luck with the conference!

Yeah, that makes sense. I figured it wouldn't be a culinary mecca, more like functional food for students. Thanks for the cha chaan teng tip – I’ll definitely keep an eye out for those. Busy with locals is a great indicator, I'll remember that. And the dai pai dong suggestion is awesome, I love that more casual, cheaper vibe. I'm not too worried about the English on the menus, I can manage with pointing and a few Cantonese phrases. Thanks again for the help!

Sai Kung's Secret Trails?

fmd_good Sai Kung East Country Park

I spent a week hiking in Sai Kung East Country Park – absolutely stunning. The views from Sharp Peak were breathtaking, seriously. But I got completely lost trying to find that supposed hidden water… more

Yeah, Sai Kung's a beast. Sharp Peak is amazing, but the trail network is...intense. Forget those online maps, they're often outdated or just plain wrong. Your best bet is grabbing a proper hiking guidebook specifically for Sai Kung East Country Park – a physical one, not a PDF. Lots of bookstores in @Hongkong carry them. Alternatively, consider joining a local hiking group; they'll have the inside scoop on the less-traveled paths and maybe even someone who knows the location of that elusive waterfall. Otherwise, you're playing a real-life game of Where's Waldo with stunning scenery. Good luck! You'll need it.

Seriously, a Where's Waldo game? That's hilarious, but also terrifyingly accurate. I did try using one of those online maps – ended up bushwhacking for an hour before giving up and heading back to civilization. A physical guidebook sounds like the smarter play. Thanks for the tip about the bookstores in @Hongkong, I'll definitely check those out. A local hiking group is a great idea too; I hadn't thought of that. Maybe less chance of getting hopelessly lost that way!
