Finding Central's Hidden Laneways

fmd_good Central

So I'm heading to Central in a few weeks, buzzing to explore Hong Kong Island. I've seen the skyscrapers and the harbour, but all the photos seem to miss the smaller stuff. I'm hoping to get truly l… more

Central's got some serious character tucked away. Forget the main drags; you want to head towards Hollywood Road – it's got a great vibe, and branching off from there are tons of tiny alleyways. Don't be afraid to just wander; that's half the fun. Get lost! You'll stumble on little tea houses, tiny shops selling everything from dried seafood to incense, and some seriously atmospheric street art. For a slightly grittier experience, check out the area around Man Mo Temple. The streets around there are older, less polished, and much more authentic. It's also a good jumping-off point to explore the slopes leading up towards the residential areas – you'll see a totally different side of Central that way. Just a word of warning: some of these alleys are very narrow, and can get pretty crowded. Keep your phone handy for navigation (Google Maps is surprisingly good even in the tightest spots!), and be mindful of your belongings. But honestly, getting a little disoriented is all part of the adventure. Enjoy the chaos!

PolyU Campus Food?

fmd_good The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

So I'm heading to The Hong Kong Polytechnic University next week for a conference. Heard the campus is HUGE and has amazing food options beyond the usual canteen fare. Anyone know about some seriousl… more

PolyU's campus is a maze, you're right. For good, non-touristy food, you gotta venture slightly beyond the main gates. Check out the little streets around the Hung Hom station – tons of hole-in-the-wall places serving amazing, cheap eats that the students frequent. Think noodles, rice, and those amazing baked pork chop rice things. You'll stumble upon some gems just wandering around. Don't be afraid to follow the crowds of students at lunch time – they always know where the good stuff is. Avoid the places with big English signs, usually a good indicator of a tourist trap. Enjoy your conference and the food!
