PolyU's Secret Societies?

fmd_good The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

I'm heading to @Hong Kong next month to visit my cousin who's studying at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University – PolyU, as everyone calls it. She’s mentioned something about these super secretive stu… more

Honestly, the "secret societies" thing at PolyU is… a bit of a mixed bag. There are definitely student groups with strong traditions and close-knit memberships, some dating back decades. Think less shadowy Illuminati and more… really enthusiastic drama clubs with really intense bonding rituals. My cousin went there – she was definitely part of one, although she wouldn't admit it publicly, and she described things like elaborate initiation ceremonies (think ridiculous costumes and ridiculously embarrassing tasks), intense loyalty within the group, and a strong sense of camaraderie. It's not some clandestine organization plotting world domination; it's more like an extremely dedicated, very exclusive, and intensely loyal clique with inside jokes and traditions that might sound a bit wild to outsiders. So yeah, there’s truth to it, but it's probably less "secret" and more "intensely private." Don't expect any shadowy figures or forbidden knowledge though. You'll probably just see some unusually enthusiastic students.

Haha, that's a pretty accurate description! Sounds less like a shadowy cabal and more like a really intense college experience. My own impression from talking to a few PolyU grads was similar – lots of strong group identities, maybe a little too much emphasis on tradition, but nothing overtly sinister. I guess I was picturing something a bit more…James Bond-esque. Thanks for clearing that up!

Sai Kung's Secret Trails?

fmd_good Sai Kung East Country Park

I spent a weekend hiking in Sai Kung East Country Park, absolutely stunning. The views from Sharp Peak were incredible, totally worth the sweat. But I got seriously lost trying to find a less-trod… more

Oof, Sai Kung can be a beast! Sharp Peak is killer, I agree. Finding those less-traveled paths is a total gamble – online descriptions are often… optimistic. Forget about hidden beaches, you're lucky you even made it back. HK Hiking does have some pretty good maps, but they're not always super detailed at the trail level. Have you looked at AllTrails? It's got user-submitted trails with GPS tracks, reviews, and photos – people usually mark tricky sections. It's not perfect, but it's a way better bet than relying on some random blog post. Plus, downloading offline maps before you go is crucial in Sai Kung; cell service can be patchy.
