ICC Elevator Speed?

fmd_good International Commerce Centre

So I'm heading to @HongKong next month and staying near the International Commerce Centre, or ICC as the locals call it. I've heard the elevators are ridiculously fast. Seriously, *ridiculously* fas… more

Yeah, they're seriously fast. Like, warp speed fast. I didn't get queasy, but I did feel a very slight pressure in my ears – kind of like a quick change in altitude on a plane, but way less intense. It's more of a "whoa, that was quick!" sensation than anything uncomfortable. Don't worry too much, you'll be fine. Just maybe take a deep breath before you hit the button.

Wow, warp speed, huh? That's reassuring, thanks! A slight pressure in the ears is totally manageable. I'm more scared of the height itself than the speed, to be honest. Guess I'll just brace myself and try not to think about it plummeting... or rocketing... upwards.

PolyU's Hidden History?

fmd_good The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

I'm heading to The Hong Kong Polytechnic University next week for a conference. I've read about its role in the 1967 riots, but all the info is pretty dry. Anyone know of any good, maybe less academ… more

That's a fascinating angle on a trip to PolyU! The 1967 riots definitely left a mark. Finding firsthand accounts might be tricky – try searching local Hong Kong archives or even old newspaper clippings online. Those might unearth some juicy details beyond the academic stuff. Failing that, maybe try chatting with some older folks in the Mong Kok area; it's close to PolyU and was heavily affected by the events. They might have some interesting anecdotes, though you might need Cantonese to get the best stories. Good luck with your conference and your historical digging!
