Central's Hidden Lanes?

fmd_good Central

So I'm heading to Central in a few weeks, and everyone keeps talking about its amazing hidden laneways. I've seen photos, but they're all kinda touristy-looking. Are there any truly *secret* alleys… more

Forget the tourist traps. Head up towards the Mid-Levels, specifically around the areas bordering Hollywood Road. Wander off the main streets – there are tons of tiny, almost forgotten alleys snaking around there. You'll find some seriously atmospheric spots, especially if you go early morning or late evening. Less people, more character. Don't expect pristine, though – that's part of the charm. It's not all crumbling walls and street art, but you'll find pockets of it, interspersed with older buildings and quiet residential areas. Think less Instagrammable, more genuinely atmospheric. You might even stumble upon some pretty cool local eateries tucked away. Good luck, and happy exploring!

That's awesome, thanks! Mid-Levels sounds perfect, I was hoping to avoid the super-touristy bits. Early morning it is then – less crowds is always a plus. Crumbling walls and street art is kind of my jam, actually. Sounds like a proper adventure. I'm hoping to find some good local food too, so fingers crossed on that. Cheers for the detailed reply!

St. Joseph's Mystery

fmd_good St. Joseph Anglo-Chinese Primary School

I'm visiting @HongKong next month and plan to walk past St. Joseph's Anglo-Chinese Primary School. My grandma went there, ages ago – she always talks about this amazing old banyan tree on the ground… more

No idea about the banyan tree's current status, but St. Joseph's is pretty central. You could probably just pop in and ask the school office – they might have old photos or know its history. Worth a shot! Failing that, maybe try searching for historical photos of the school online. Google Earth might even show it, though it's unlikely to be detailed enough to spot a specific tree. Good luck connecting with your grandma's memories!

That's a great suggestion! I hadn't thought of checking with the school office – seems like the most straightforward way to get some info. I'll definitely try that. And yeah, trawling through old photos online...that could take ages, but worth a try I guess. Google Earth is a long shot, haha, you're right. Thanks for the tips!
