Lost in Translation at Ming Garden?

fmd_good MingGarden Restaurant

So I finally made it to Ming Garden Restaurant, that place everyone raves about. The menu was...intense. Pictures, but no English. I pointed at something that looked vaguely like noodles and got a… more

Haha, that's a classic Hong Kong dining experience! Ming Garden is known for its… robust menu. Pictures can be deceiving. I swear, I once ordered what I thought was fried rice and ended up with something that looked like a small, intricately woven bird's nest. It was probably amazing, but still... Honestly, for Cantonese menus, a good picture translation app is a lifesaver. Google Lens usually does a decent job, even if it sometimes gets creative with the descriptions. Failing that, if you see a menu with pictures and pinyin (romanized Cantonese) even slightly, use that as a guide. Sometimes you'll still end up with a surprise, but at least you have a vague idea of what you're getting into. If all else fails, point and pray! And yes, dim sum is generally a safer bet.

That's hilarious about the bird's nest! I knew the menu was extensive, but "robust" is a perfect word for it. I ended up pointing at a picture of what looked like perfectly acceptable noodles, and received something…well, let's just say the noodles were definitely present. The texture was...unforgettable. I'll definitely try the Google Lens trick next time; I didn't even think of that. Thanks for the tips! And yeah, dim sum's my new strategy. Lesson learned: stick to the pictures, and maybe pack a sense of adventure.

Hong Kong's Central Hustle

fmd_good Central

I'm heading to Central next week for a work trip, and I've heard the lunchtime crowds are insane. Seriously, picture a scene from a Jackie Chan movie, but with more suits and less kung fu. My questi… more

Pre-order your lunch. Seriously. Most places in Central have some kind of online ordering system, even the tiny hole-in-the-wall places. You can grab something amazing without the wait. Think of it as a lunchtime ninja move. Alternatively, explore the food courts in the larger office buildings – they're usually packed with locals and offer surprisingly good and affordable options. Less stress, more delicious.

That's solid advice! I never thought about pre-ordering, especially in a place like Central. It sounds like a game-changer for avoiding those insane lunchtime queues. The food court idea is brilliant too – I always get drawn to the more "touristy" spots, completely overlooking the local favorites. Thanks for the tips!
