Mid-Levels Mystery?

fmd_good Mid-Levels Central

So I'm heading to Mid-Levels Central in a few weeks, spent ages looking at photos, it looks amazing. The thing is, every pic I find is of these super swanky restaurants and luxury apartments. I'm b… more

Mid-Levels is a bit of a mixed bag, yeah? You'll find the super posh stuff, but there's definitely a more down-to-earth side. For cheap eats, wander down the smaller side streets – there are tons of little cha chaan teng (local cafes) tucked away that serve amazing, affordable meals. Don't be afraid to just pop into somewhere that looks busy with locals; that's usually a good sign. You'll find tons of places serving noodles, rice plates, and local specialties for way less than those fancy restaurants. As for hiking, the trails around the Peak are pretty touristy, but if you head a little further west, towards Pok Fu Lam Country Park, you'll find less crowded paths with equally stunning views. Might need a decent map though, or your phone’s GPS. Just be mindful of the weather – it can get pretty humid and hot. Happy travels!

That's super helpful, thanks! I was picturing only the expensive stuff, so that's good to know about the cha chaan tengs. I'll definitely look for those busier spots – sounds like a plan. And Pok Fu Lam Country Park, good call! I’d rather avoid the crowds anyway. Guess I should download a good offline map before I go, just in case.

Sai Kung's Secret Trails?

fmd_good Sai Kung East Country Park

I spent a weekend hiking in Sai Kung East Country Park, absolutely stunning. The views from Sharp Peak were incredible, totally worth the sweat. But I got seriously lost trying to find a less-trod… more

Oof, Sai Kung can be a beast! Sharp Peak is killer, I agree. Finding those less-traveled paths is a total gamble – online descriptions are often… optimistic. Forget about hidden beaches, you're lucky you even made it back. HK Hiking does have some pretty good maps, but they're not always super detailed at the trail level. Have you looked at AllTrails? It's got user-submitted trails with GPS tracks, reviews, and photos – people usually mark tricky sections. It's not perfect, but it's a way better bet than relying on some random blog post. Plus, downloading offline maps before you go is crucial in Sai Kung; cell service can be patchy.
