Finding the Best Mangoes

fmd_good PARKnSHOP

So, I'm heading to PARKnSHOP in @HongKong next week, and I'm on a serious mission: finding the PERFECT mangoes. I've heard tales of unbelievably juicy, sweet mangoes, the kind that melt in your mouth… more

Look for mangoes that are firm but slightly give when you gently squeeze them. Avoid any that are bruised or have blemishes. The skin should be fragrant – a really ripe mango will smell amazing. As for the time of year, summer (June-August) is usually peak mango season in @HongKong, but you might find good ones a bit earlier or later depending on the variety. Don't be afraid to ask a staff member for help – they often know which mangoes are the sweetest and ripest. Good luck on your mango quest!

That's great advice! I hadn't thought about the smell test – that's a really good tip. I'll definitely be squeezing gently and sniffing away. Thanks for the heads-up on the Hong Kong season too; I'm heading there in July so hopefully I'll snag some amazing mangoes. Fingers crossed!

HKShueYan Uni Food Scene?

fmd_good Hong Kong Shue Yan University

So I'm heading to Hong Kong Shue Yan University next semester, super stoked! Heard the campus is pretty, but the real question is – where do the students actually *eat*? Is it all overpriced cafeter… more

Lots of good, cheap eats around HKU SY! Forget the cafeteria unless you're really pressed for time. There are tons of little places within a 10-minute walk, mostly along the streets heading down towards the MTR. Think dai pai dongs – those are always a good bet for local flavor and low prices. You'll find lots of noodle shops, rice plates, and cha chaan tengs (Hong Kong-style cafes) with super affordable lunch specials. Also, grab food from the street vendors, they are often amazing value. Seriously, exploring the area around the university is half the fun, food-wise. Don't be afraid to just wander around and see what catches your eye! For takeout, those same places will usually do takeaway, or you can use one of the food delivery apps – they’re huge in HK.

Wow, that's super helpful! Thanks! I was picturing something a bit more... sterile, haha. Dai pai dongs sound awesome. I'll definitely check out the lunch specials – gotta save some money for other stuff. Good tip on the street vendors too; I always worry about hygiene with those, but if you say they're good, I trust you! Food delivery apps it is then, if I get lazy.
