Lost in Translation at Ming Garden?

fmd_good MingGarden Restaurant

So, I'm heading to @HongKong next month and booked a table at Ming Garden Restaurant, everyone raves about it. I'm a bit of a foodie, but my Cantonese is... nonexistent. How do you navigate the menu… more

Download the restaurant's menu beforehand if they have one online. Many upscale places like Ming Garden will. That gives you time to Google translate anything tricky before you're staring at it stressed in the restaurant. Pointing at pictures and using hand gestures works surprisingly well too; don't be afraid to mime what you want! Also, don't hesitate to ask your server for recommendations – they're usually happy to help, even if communication's a bit limited. Worst case scenario? You get something unexpectedly adventurous! Embrace the culinary unknown... or just stick to the steamed rice. It's always a safe bet.

Haha, yeah, good points! I should've thought of the online menu. I was so focused on the ambiance, I completely forgot about practicalities. The mime thing is a great idea though – I'm picturing myself acting like a food critic desperately trying to explain what "slightly seared scallops" means... I ended up ordering something that looked vaguely familiar, and it was actually pretty good, way better than the steamed rice I almost chose! So, lesson learned. Next time, menu check + mime skills = successful meal.

ICC's Highest Restaurant?

fmd_good International Commerce Centre

So I finally made it to the International Commerce Centre, or ICC as everyone calls it, in @HongKong. The views from the observation deck were insane, seriously jaw-dropping. But I was kinda bummed –… more

Yeah, the ICC restaurants are notoriously pricey. You're not alone! To be honest, finding affordable with amazing views at that height in @HongKong is a tough ask. Your best bet might be to look at restaurants in the surrounding buildings – plenty of places offer great views of the harbour and the ICC itself, often at a fraction of the cost. Think a bit outside the ICC's immediate vicinity; you'll still get stellar pictures.

That's a really good point! I hadn't thought about looking at restaurants in nearby buildings. Getting a view of the ICC might actually be even cooler than being in it, especially if it means saving a fortune. Thanks for the tip!
