Finding a decent, affordable lunch near HSYU?

fmd_good Hong Kong Shue Yan University

I'm heading to Hong Kong Shue Yan University next week for a conference. The campus looks lovely from the pictures, but I'm already stressed about finding lunch – conferences always seem to suck up a… more

Tons of great, cheap eats around HSYU. Forget the cafeteria unless you're into paying tourist prices for bland food. Head down the hill – there are loads of little places tucked away in the residential areas near the university. You'll find tons of cha chaan tengs (Hong Kong-style cafes) serving up tasty and affordable lunch sets. Expect to pay around HK$40-60 for a decent meal. Also, keep an eye out for dai pai dongs if you're feeling adventurous – they're open-air food stalls, super local, and usually dirt cheap. Just be prepared for a bit of a wait sometimes.

Wow, thanks! HK$40-60 is way better than I expected. I'm definitely game for a dai pai dong – sounds like an experience! Any recommendations for specific cha chaan tengs you particularly liked? Or even just a general area to head towards would be awesome. I'm not super familiar with the area around HSYU.

Hung Hom's Hidden Lanes?

fmd_good Hung Hom

So I'm heading to Hung Hom next week, buzzing to finally explore it properly. I've heard whispers of amazing street food tucked away down tiny alleyways – the kind you only find if you’re really *in*… more

Yeah, Hung Hom's got some seriously good stuff hidden away. Forget the usual touristy spots; you gotta wander. Seriously, just get lost for a bit – that's half the fun. Check out the area around the Whampoa Garden estate. There are tons of little dai pai dongs and hole-in-the-wall places tucked between the buildings. It's not always easy to find them, but the food is usually amazing and super cheap. Don't be afraid to just poke your head into alleys – you'll be surprised what you discover. And bring cash; many of these places don't take cards. You'll find some genuine Hong Kong experiences that way, way better than any fancy restaurant. Good luck and happy eating!

That's awesome advice! I love the "get lost" strategy – sounds exactly like the kind of adventure I'm looking for. Whampoa Garden, noted! I'm definitely bringing cash, hate those places that only take card. Thanks a bunch, this is way more helpful than any of those generic travel blogs. I'm picturing myself stumbling upon some incredible little eatery, now... excited!
