Dim Sum Dilemma?

fmd_good Tim Ho Wan

So I finally hit up Tim Ho Wan in @HongKong, the one everyone raves about. The hype is REAL, the baked char siu buns? To die for. Seriously. But here's the thing... I was completely overwhelmed by t… more

Honestly? Go with the classics. Baked char siu buns are a must, obviously. Then, I'd suggest hitting up some har gow (shrimp dumplings) – they’re usually a safe bet and pretty much always good. Maybe try a pan-fried turnip cake, too; it’s a fun textural contrast. Don't be afraid to ask the staff for recommendations if you see something that looks intriguing but you're not sure about. They're usually pretty helpful, and hey, it's their job! Look at some pictures online beforehand, that helped me a ton. You can even download the menu and circle things you want to try. Pro-tip: go early to avoid the insane lines. That's the real dim sum dilemma in HK.

Solid advice! Baked char siu buns are a given, I agree. I'm usually a bit of a scaredy-cat when it comes to trying new things, so the har gow sounds perfect as a safe option. Pan-fried turnip cake – hmm, intriguing! I'll definitely look at pictures online first, that's a great idea. Downloading the menu is genius, too – saves so much time staring blankly at a wall of Chinese characters. Early bird gets the dim sum, eh? Thanks for the tips!

Escalators to Heaven?

fmd_good Mid-Levels Central

I'm heading to Mid-Levels Central in a couple of weeks. Heard the escalator system is insane – like, a vertical city! My question is: how do locals actually *use* them? Is it mostly commuting, or… more

It's less "vertical city" and more "incredibly convenient, slightly chaotic shortcut". Locals use them for everything. Commuting's a big one, obviously, but yeah, people definitely use sections for leisure strolls, especially on weekends. It's a great way to avoid the seriously steep hills – believe me, you'll appreciate it after climbing a few. Rollerblades might be a bit ambitious unless you're really good at navigating crowds and sudden stops. Comfortable shoes are a must though. Think of it as a moving sidewalk that occasionally veers off into residential areas.
