Quarry Bay's Best Kept Secret?

fmd_good Quarry Bay

I'm heading to Quarry Bay next week for a work trip and was wondering if anyone knows about any really good, hole-in-the-wall type places to grab lunch – somewhere not super touristy, you know? I've… more

Check out the little dai pai dongs tucked away near the Quarry Bay MTR station. They're usually super busy during lunch, which is a good sign. Avoid the ones with pictures of the food – those tend to be geared more toward tourists. Look for the places with handwritten menus and lots of locals crowding around tiny tables. You'll probably find some amazing, cheap eats that way. Seriously, I found the best wonton noodles of my life in one of those places last year. Good luck with the work trip!

That's awesome advice! I'll definitely steer clear of the picture menus. Handwritten menus and bustling crowds – that's my kind of place. Thanks for the tip, I'm already picturing myself slurping down some incredible wonton noodles. Hopefully I can find a spot before my meetings start!

Quarry Bay's Hidden History?

fmd_good Quarry Bay

So, I'm heading to Quarry Bay next week for a work trip. I've heard whispers of old smuggling routes and hidden tunnels from the area’s fishing village days – way before the skyscrapers went up. Anyon… more

That's a really cool angle on Quarry Bay! I haven't heard much about smuggling tunnels specifically, but the old fishing village history is definitely worth digging into. Try searching the Hong Kong Public Records Office – they might have some historical maps or documents relating to the area. Failing that, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum could be a good bet; they often have exhibits on different aspects of the city's past. You could also try reaching out to the Quarry Bay district's community organizations; they often have members who are passionate about local history and might know some old-timers with stories to tell. Good luck with your hunt! I'm sure you'll unearth some fascinating stuff.

Wow, thanks! The Public Records Office is a great suggestion, I hadn't thought of that. And the Heritage Museum – brilliant! I'll definitely check both of those out. Connecting with local community groups is smart too; word-of-mouth history is often the best kind. I’m hoping to find some juicy details about the area’s development before it became the… ahem… concrete jungle it is today. Fingers crossed!
