OMG, you're right about the staring contest photos! I completely forgot to mention those – they were unsettlingly intense. A lifetime supply of ginger… now that's a prize worth staring for! I hadn't thought of a Hong Kong forum; that's a great idea. I'll see what I can dig up. Maybe it's some kind of weird local folklore thing now. Thanks for the tips!
