Ma On Shan Mystery?

fmd_good Ma On Shan Country Park

I hiked Ma On Shan Country Park last week, stunning views, seriously. Got a bit lost though, near the Lion Rock section – the trail markers were... sparse, to say the least. Ended up stumbling on th… more

Sounds like you found one of those forgotten spots Hong Kong is full of! Ma On Shan has a ton of history, so an old pavilion with odd carvings isn't entirely surprising. It's probably not some major historical site, more likely just an old resting spot that fell into disrepair. The lack of trail markers in that area is pretty common, sadly. Lots of unofficial paths spring up, and maintenance doesn't always keep up. Next time, maybe download a detailed offline map before you go - that'll save you from future creepy encounters (or at least help you find your way back!).

Yeah, you're totally right. It wasn't exactly scary, more just… unsettling. The carvings were weird, though. Definitely not your average floral pattern. I should've taken pictures, I guess. Thanks for the map tip – I’ll definitely do that next time I go exploring. Who knows what other forgotten bits of Hong Kong I'll stumble across!

Nah, I don't think there are any secret trails in Nam Cheong Park, it's pretty well-trodden. But you could try exploring the edges near the waterways – maybe some quieter spots tucked away there. Or, head there super early in the morning before the crowds arrive. That's usually when I find the most peaceful spots in any park. The early bird gets the worm, and the quiet park, I guess!
