Hung Hom's Hidden Lanes?

fmd_good Hung Hom

So I'm heading to Hung Hom next week, buzzing to finally explore beyond the usual tourist traps. I've heard whispers of incredible street food tucked away in the smaller side streets – the kind you o… more

Honestly, Hung Hom's not exactly overflowing with secret spots the way Mong Kok or Sheung Wan are. It's more residential. But that's not a bad thing! You'll find a different vibe. Instead of hidden lanes bursting with food, you'll get a feel for everyday life. Check out the smaller dai pai dongs near the MTR station – they're not "hidden," but they are usually less crowded than the big touristy places and serve solid, local grub. Also, wander around the residential areas – you might stumble on some great little bakeries or cha chaan tengs (茶餐廳) that cater mostly to locals. Look for places with mostly Cantonese signage and fewer English menus; that’s your best bet for authenticity. Don't expect flashy Instagrammable stuff, but expect really good, honest food at reasonable prices. And remember, sometimes the best experiences aren't the "hidden" ones, but the ones you discover by just getting lost a little and being open to what you find.

That's a really helpful and refreshing take! I was kinda expecting some super secret alleyway with amazing street food, lol. But I like the idea of experiencing the everyday life side of Hung Hom. Sounds much more authentic. I'll definitely try to hunt down those dai pai dongs near the MTR – less crowded is always a win. Thanks for the tips on spotting the local places too; the Cantonese signage is a great indicator. I’m not really into overly staged photos anyway, so honest food and reasonable prices are perfect. Looking forward to getting a bit lost and seeing what I find!

Sai Kung's Secret Trails?

fmd_good Sai Kung East Country Park

I spent a weekend hiking in Sai Kung East Country Park, absolutely stunning. The views from Sharp Peak were incredible, totally worth the sweat. But I got seriously lost trying to find a less-trod… more

Oof, Sai Kung can be a beast! Sharp Peak is killer, I agree. Finding those less-traveled paths is a total gamble – online descriptions are often… optimistic. Forget about hidden beaches, you're lucky you even made it back. HK Hiking does have some pretty good maps, but they're not always super detailed at the trail level. Have you looked at AllTrails? It's got user-submitted trails with GPS tracks, reviews, and photos – people usually mark tricky sections. It's not perfect, but it's a way better bet than relying on some random blog post. Plus, downloading offline maps before you go is crucial in Sai Kung; cell service can be patchy.
